Mission statement of Immanuel UCC:
We are Immanuel United Church of Christ, a body of faith-based believers serving the community, building on the traditions that have given us strength and trusting in the loving ways the spirit will guide us into our future.
The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 with the union of two Protestant denominations: the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. Each of these was also a result of an earlier union.
In 1648, the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation (begun in 1620) and the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (organized in 1629) joined together. Acknowledging their unity in the Cambridge Platform, the two churches formed the Congregational Churches.
The Christian Churches began in the late 1700's and early 1800's in reaction to the theological and organizational rigidity of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist churches of the time.
The Reformed church in the United States traces its beginnings to 1725 with congregations of German settlers in Pennsylvania. Later, members of Reformed Churches from Switzerland and other countries joined them.
The Evangelical Synod of North America goes back to an association of German Evangelical pastors in Missouri. This association, founded in 1841, reflected the 1817 union of the Lutheran and Reformed Churches in Germany.
Through the years other groups such as native Americans, Afro-Christians, Asian Americans, Volga Germans, Armenians, Hungarians and Hispanic Americans have joined the four earlier groups. The United Church of Christ celebrates and continues a wide variety of traditions in its common life.
